With winter rains, Bay Area pill bugs are out in force. Fortunately, they’re one of our most beloved “bugs.” Pill bugs. Doodle bugs. Potato bugs. Wood Shrimp. Whatever you call them, there’s something less creepy about these critters than other insects. Maybe it’s because they’re not insects at all.

Pill bugs are more closely related to shrimp and lobsters than crickets or butterflies. Their ancestors lived in the sea, but ancient pill bugs crawled out millions of years ago to carve a life for themselves on dry land.

You can see the evidence if you take a close look at them, so that’s exactly what we did for this episode of Deep Look, an ultra-high definition wildlife video series produced by KQED and PBS Digital Studios.

Projections in the Forest

The projection mapping "bioluminescent forest" is made by artists Friedrich van Schoor and Tarek Mawad.The artists spent six weeks in the forest fascinated by the silence and natural occurrences in nature, especially the phenomenon "bioluminescence". They personified the forest to accentuate the natural beauty by creating luring luminescent plants and glowing magical mushrooms that speaks volumes to any visitor that enters the minds of the artists through viewing "bioluminescent forest".

Amazing Little Puffer Fish Creates Ocean Floor ‘Crop Circles'

"Right around this time last year, news broke about the discovery of an amazing little puffer fish capable of creating elaborately designed ‘crop circles’ at the bottom of the ocean as part of an elaborate mating ritual. The behavior was first documented by a photographer named Yoji Ookata who later returned with a film crew from the Japanese nature show NHK which later aired an episode about the fish. Even as articles bounced around the web it was still difficult to imagine how a tiny fish could create such a large design in the sand, even when staring directly at photographic evidence. Finally, video has emerged that shows just how the little guy delicately traverses the sand in a rotating criss-cross pattern to create a sort of subaquatic spirograph. The textured sand sculpture not only attracts mates but also serves as protection when the fish pair and lays eggs."

Can you imagine lifting-up from a highway during rush hour traffic and flying away?! The next TF-X will have four-seats, collapsible wings, retractable propellers and an emergency parachute system. The best part is, it will be capable of driving and flying on its own! Terrafugia’s CEO Car Dietrich said, “This is the right time for us to begin thinking about the future". We think he's right and wonder what type of license we will need to drive/fly one of these. We especially can't wait to try that "Vertical Takeoff and Landing"!"

"There’s talk of a train, of sorts, that will allow us to get from Los Angeles to New York in under an hour. It’s a Hyperloop system and it would travel at speeds of 4,000 mph. I’m no Rocket Scientist, but I feel confident saying it: that’s fast. The projected price to travel in a six person “capsule” in this elevated tube system? A hundred bucks. I’m in. I’m so damn in. I’m also claustrophobic, but come on! This is some serious A Wrinkle in Time s**t!"

5/31/2013 CLOSE RANGE Union City, Oklahoma Tornado - INSANE Video

Brett and Brandon got extremely close to a violent tornadic circulation that produced multiple tornadoes in very close range... The team was hit by inflow jet winds into the tornado and their vehicle received damage as a barn was completely destroyed. A hay bale came barreling across the road and was tossed into their car.. The team is very fortunate to live to chase another day... Incredible storm chaser traffic prevented an escape from the tornado like normal.. There have been fatalities with this tornado.. The team's thoughts go out to those affected!

The Hero Who Rescued Three Kidnapped Women in Cleveland Is Hilarious

Charles Ramsey, who helped rescue three missing Cleveland women from the house where they'd been held captive for a decade, is more than just a good Samaritan and hero: He's also an amazing interview. (And even better on the phone with 911.)

Ramsey, who lives next door to the house where the women were trapped, gave two lively and captivating interviews to local news affiliates after aiding in their rescue yesterday. Ramsey, off from work, heard Amanda Berry screaming, and came outside to see what was going on: "I'm eating my McDonald's; I come outside; I see this girl going nuts," he says. "I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man's arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway!"

As it turned out, Amanda Berry was the Amanda Berry, a Cleveland girl who'd been missing for 10 years. In the house with her were two other young women, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, who'd also gone missing in the last decade—as well as a young girl, apparently Berry's daughter. All three had apparently been kidnapped and held, allegedly by the house's owner Ariel Castro, 52—"I barbecued with this dude! We ate ribs and whatnot, and listened to salsa music!" Ramsey says—who has been arrested along with two of his brothers

This morning, all three women were released from the hospital. The FBI is still investigating, but doesn't believe any more women were taken.

The World’s First 3D Printing Pen that Lets you Draw Sculptures in Real Time

Forget those pesky 3D printers that require software and the knowledge of 3D modeling and behold the 3Doodler, the world’s first pen that draws in three dimensions in real time. Imagine holding a pen and waving it through the air, only the line your pen creates stays frozen, suspended and permanent in 3D space. Sound like magic? Well it certainly looks like it, watch the video above to see the thing in action. The 3Doodler was designed by Boston-based company WobbleWorks who recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to sell the miraculous little devices that utilizes a special plastic which is heated and instantly cooled to form solid structures as you draw. Shattered Glass Animals by Marta Klonowska

Using carefully broken shards of colored glass, Polish artist Marta Klonowska assembles translucent animals in life-like proportion and size. Almost all of her sculptures are based on animals found in baroque and romantic paintings by such artists as Peter Paul Rubens or Francisco de Goya next to which they are often displayed.
